MEL is core language of Maya, Maya is almost written in MEL. Maya User interface has been/can be created with MEL. With MEL you can write your own script in Maya, Thus MEL is a scripting language. All tools and panels of interface and all things of interface are almost scripted in MEL. MEL stands for Maya Embedded Language. Even a MEL scripter can create and control all user interfaces, a scripter can make their own interface in Maya. MEL is expert level job. It needs a little basic understanding of programming. If you have some knowhow in C++ you will easily understand the MEL.

MEL is easier than C++ or any other programming language. It is, in some cases as simple as we speak or write things on our note book. For example if you want to create a readymade 3d sphere with MEL you will only type the word “sphere” in command line and you will see a primitive in the scene right after the execution of MEL command.

Someone who wants Maya to make his/her career he/she should get good command on writing MEL scripts in Maya, because there are many times when you need to write some script in Maya or some 3d software.
