Part 2 - Animating 3D Gear in Maya

This Free video tutorial will explain how to animate 3d gears. After this tutorial you will be able to model and animate gear system for your machines.

Animate Gears

You must have objects before rotating them on specific attribute for a mechanical motion. So,

  • Open your file which you have saved in part 1

  • Select one gear object
  • Set the Menus to Dynamics Menu Set
  • Go to Soft/Rigid Bodies Menu > Create Active Rigid Boy options

  • In option’s window Go to Edit Menu and reset settings
  • Click create
  • Open up the Channel Box
  • Change the Initial Spine Y value to 100 or whatsoever speed you need
  • Change the center of Mass to 0, 0, 0 in X,Y,Z

  • Play the animation from Playback controls
  • Next, select the second gear object
  • Repeat the same things but this time change the Initial Spine Y to -100 or whatsoever speed you need.

    • Note: it is necessary to change the value this time in minus (-)

  • Done

  • Play the animation
