Lets stat with the cube we had created after the base cube I named it branch.

 

Select all other objects and hide them from

Display > Hide

By right clicking a mouse select the face, and now select these two faces I had selected.

 

Now go in edit mash and select Extrude. You can also select it from polygons shelf.

Edit Mash > Extrude

you notice a gizmo appears like this.

 

Left click on the Z axis arrow and move towards the Z axis you can see in the channel box local translate Z is moving you can also type and extrude as much you like right now type 1.5 in local translate Z like this.

 

The shape will change like the picture below.

 

That is how we can change the shapes by extrusion.

Select the vertex, delete some edges and some bevel change the shape like this.
